Four people close to the decision-making process have confirmed to the broadcaster that Harris had chosen Walz, a former educator and current Minnesota governor in his second term, as her running mate. He also chairs the Democratic Governors Association and previously served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning rural district.
An official announcement is expected to be sent to supporters today.
Harris’ team traveled to the Minnesota Governor’s mansion to congratulate Walz and accompany him to Philadelphia for the campaign rally, according to the report.
Sources told CNN that Harris grew increasingly comfortable with Walz during the final stages of the vetting process, particularly drawn to his “happy-go-lucky” demeanor. Harris picking Walz is viewed as a strategic move to bolster the Democratic ticket’s appeal in the Midwest, a crucial region in the upcoming election, the report added.
Harris vs. Trump Credit: AP The announcement comes as the November 5 election rapidly approaches, with Harris having narrowed the gap with Republican nominee Donald Trump in a number of latest polls. According to a recent CBS News/YouGov survey, Harris holds a narrow one percent lead over Trump nationally, reversing Trump’s previous five-point advantage over President Biden.
In key swing states, Harris and Trump are currently tied. These numbers are considered favorable for the Democratic nominee, who only entered the race last month after President Joe Biden stepped aside due to concerns over his age and health.
Being the first Black and South Asian woman to serve as the US Vice President, Harris is facing a tight race to introduce herself to voters and establish her own identity before Trump begins his campaign efforts.
