Musk says will Move X HQ Out of San Francisco to San Jose, Palo Alto
  • PublishedAugust 6, 2024

Elon Musk has announced that he is moving the flagship office of his social media platform X out of San Francisco due to difficulties with local laws and payment processing.

In a post on X, Musk responded to a New York Times report revealing an email from X CEO Linda Yaccarino, confirming the office closure and relocation of staff to San Jose and Palo Alto.

This move comes just weeks after tech billionaire voiced his plans to relocate both X and his rocket company SpaceX to Texas, citing a new California law preventing schools from requiring staff to disclose information about a child’s gender identity to parents. Musk described the law as “the last straw” in a previous post.

“No choice. It is impossible to operate in San Francisco if you’re processing payments,” Musk stated on X, implying that local laws are hindering the platform’s operations.

“That’s why Stripe, Block (CashApp) & others had to move,” he added, implying that other firms have faced similar challenges.

In 2021, Musk moved Tesla’s headquarters to Texas in and is a resident of the state.

Since purchasing X (formerly known as Twitter) in 2022 for $44 billion, the billionaire has implemented significant changes, including job cuts, and reduced content moderation.
