A record number of migrants crossed the English Channel in a single day since Labor took power, reaching the UK shores in 11 boats on Sunday, Sky News reports.

The Home Office reported a total of 703 people detected crossing, marking the third highest daily figure for this year.

This influx comes amidst a tragic loss of life, as two people perished during the crossing. A small boat carrying around 50 migrants sent a distress signal to the French coastguard, prompting a rescue operation involving a helicopter and two boats.

While many were rescued, “fuel burn injuries” were reported, and all were returned to France. The French authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The record number of arrivals, an average of 64 people per boat, reflects the ongoing challenges facing the UK government in managing the migrant crisis.

Despite ongoing efforts by both the UK and French authorities to deter crossings, the flow of migrants continues unabated., according to the media outlet.
