A major military barracks in western Germany has been placed under lockdown following suspicions of unauthorized entry and potential sabotage, The Associated Press reports, citing the country’s Defense Ministry.

The Wahn barracks, located outside Cologne, was closed off on Wednesday as investigators examined the scene, ministry spokesperson Arne Collatz said, confirming suspicions of attempted or actual illegal entry and sabotage without further details.

German news agency dpa, citing unnamed sources, reported that a hole was discovered in the facility’s fence and there are unconfirmed suspicions that the barracks’ water supply may have been tampered with. Water samples have been taken for analysis as part of the investigation.

The Wahn barracks serve as the base for the German government’s military aircraft fleet, located at Cologne/Bonn Airport.

Speaking outside the barracks, military spokesperson Ulrich Fonrobert stated that the barracks’ gates would be reopened later on Wednesday.

The investigation into the suspected sabotage and unauthorized entry is underway.
