Vice President Kamala Harris, during a joint campaign appearance with President Joe Biden in Pittsburgh, made a statement regarding the planned sale of US Steel to Nippon Steel of Japan, advocating for the company to remain domestically owned, CBS News reports.
Harris, speaking at the event in the industrial city of Pittsburgh, declared that US Steel “should remain American-owned and American-operated,” stressing its importance as “an historic American company” that is “vital for our nation to maintain strong American steel companies.”
This echoed President Biden’s position on the sale, which he first expressed in the spring, stating that American steel companies should be powered by American workers. On Monday, Biden reiterated this stance, declaring, “United States Steel, an iconic American company for more than a century, is going to remain an American company.”
The proposed merger between US Steel and Nippon Steel was agreed upon in December 2023. In May, US Steel announced that the merger is expected to be completed in the second half of 2024, subject to regulatory approvals.
