Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP, has declined to endorse either former US President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris, stressing the importance of voter education and community engagement instead, CNN reports.
Mahomes was asked about the potential for his name being used in the political arena following comments made by Trump, who praised Mahomes’ wife, Brittany, as a “big Trump fan.” Mahomes’ response was clear:
“I don’t want my place and my platform to be used to endorse a candidate or do whatever, either way.”
He reiterated his commitment to promoting voter registration and encouraging individuals to conduct their own research before making decisions about candidates.
“My place is to inform people to get registered to vote. It is to inform people to do their own research and then make their best decision for them and their family,” Mahomes said.
Mahomes stressed that his approach to life and community engagement transcends political divides:
“At the end of the day, it’s about me and my family and how we treat other people.”
He expressed his belief in the power of unity and common goals, drawing parallels to the experience of a football locker room where people from diverse backgrounds come together to achieve a shared objective.
“I’ve grown up with people from every aspect of life and every background,” he said. “I think the best thing about a football locker room… is people can come together and achieve something and achieve a common goal.”
