Vice President Kamala Harris drew criticism and sparked controversy during a virtual campaign rally hosted by Oprah Winfrey Thursday, after she stated she would “shoot” any intruder entering her home, Fox News reports.
The remark came during a discussion about gun violence at the “Unite for America Rally,” an event aimed at mobilizing support for the Biden-Harris ticket. Winfrey, who hosted the livestream featuring celebrities and citizens’ stories, expressed surprise at Harris’ previous disclosure of gun ownership during a recent presidential debate.
“If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot, sorry,” Harris replied with a laugh.
This statement immediately drew backlash on social media, with critics highlighting the perceived hypocrisy of Harris’ stance, given her past support for gun control measures, including mandatory buyback programs.
Conservative commentator Stephen Miller echoed similar sentiments, urging journalists to investigate Harris’ past advocacy for gun control measures.
The event, organized by the “Win with Black Women” organization, drew an audience of 400 people in Oakland County, Michigan, and featured appearances by numerous celebrities, including Bryan Cranston, Chris Rock, and Meryl Streep.
