A 20-year-old American student, Brook Cheuvront from North Carolina, was found dead on Table Mountain after going missing during a solo hike, CNN reports.

The news was confirmed by SANParks, the South African National Parks agency, on Monday.

Cheuvront was last seen on Saturday, when the tracking app she was using stopped updating and friends were unable to contact her. An extensive search was launched, involving rangers, wilderness rescue teams, and trail runners. The search was suspended late Saturday evening due to safety concerns.

An aircraft joined the search efforts on Sunday and ultimately helped locate Cheuvront’s body.

The cause of death is currently unknown, and an inquest has been opened to determine the circumstances surrounding her passing.

Following the incident, SANParks has strongly urged hikers to avoid solo trips and recommended that groups of at least four people hike together for safety.
