Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, confirmed her death, sharing a statement that she died peacefully in a hospital surrounded by loved ones.

“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” the statement read.

Smith’s career spanned over six decades, during which she captivated audiences with her sharp wit, impeccable comedic timing, and nuanced portrayals of complex characters. She won two Academy Awards for her roles in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” and “California Suite.”

Her unforgettable portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the “Harry Potter” film series and her role as the formidable Violet Crawley, Countess of Grantham, in “Downton Abbey” solidified her status as a global icon.
