FDA Issues Urgent Recall of Eggs Linked to Serious Health Risks

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for chicken eggs, Komo News reports.

“[Eggs could]cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” FDA stated.

This alert affects eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market, with the FDA advising consumers not to eat, sell, or serve the affected products.

Originally announced on September 6, the recall has been upgraded to a Class I designation, indicating a significant risk of severe health outcomes. The recall encompasses all sizes of cartons and types of eggs under the Milo’s Poultry Farms label and all carton sizes of Tony’s Fresh Market branded eggs, with no specific expiration dates exempted.

The recall affects nine states and is linked to a Salmonella outbreak, with 65 reported cases of illness. Of these, 24 individuals were hospitalized, although no fatalities have been recorded. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has warned that this particular strain of Salmonella may not respond well to standard antibiotics, potentially necessitating alternative treatment for those affected.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically emerge between 12 to 72 hours after consumption of contaminated food and can last from four to seven days. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
