As winter approaches, US Highway 212, known as the Beartooth Highway, will close for the 2024-25 winter season starting Tuesday, October 15.

The closure affects the section between 9.4 miles east of the intersection of US Highway 212 and Wyoming State Highway 296, extending about 12 miles southwest of Red Lodge, Montana.

Located at nearly 11,000 feet above sea level, the highway is prone to heavy snowfall. Due to the combination of significant snow accumulation and low traffic during the winter months, snow plowing is impractical, leading to the seasonal shutdown.

Wyoming and Montana Department of Transportation officials confirmed that this annual closure is typical, with the highway usually reopening around Memorial Day in the spring.
