Time is running out for US residents to claim part of the $115 million settlement Oracle agreed to pay over allegations that it violated privacy laws by selling users’ personal information to third parties, FOX 8 reports.
The deadline to file a claim in the class action lawsuit is Thursday, October 17, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
Oracle, one of the largest technology companies in the US, settled the lawsuit, which accused it of tracking and selling personal data—including search history, purchases, and location—without users’ consent. The lawsuit claims that Oracle’s advertising technologies collected this information from “hundreds of millions of people.” Oracle, while denying any wrongdoing, agreed to the payout.
Anyone who has lived in the US since August 19, 2018, and had their personal data collected or sold through Oracle’s advertising products may be eligible to file a claim. Individuals may not know if their data was impacted, but a claim can still be filed by providing basic personal information. If validated, eligible individuals will receive payments through prepaid debit cards, direct deposit, Venmo, or Zelle.
Payments will be distributed after the settlement receives final court approval, with a hearing scheduled for November 14. Appeals or objections may cause delays.
