As temperatures drop and fall takes hold in Wyoming, residents are being reminded to brace for an influx of rodents, K2 Radio reports.

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) is marking Rodent Awareness Week by alerting homeowners about the rising threat of rodent infestations during the cooler months.

Each winter, approximately 21 million US homes are invaded by rodents, which can cause significant damage, contaminate food, and spread diseases.

“Rodents are more than just a seasonal nuisance; they pose real threats to both health and property,” said Dr. Jim Fredericks, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for the NPMA.

He emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to avoid infestations and protect homes.

According to a recent NPMA survey, while 43% of Americans recognize that rodents can transmit dangerous diseases, only 17% take immediate action by contacting a pest control professional. Dr. Fredericks advises against handling infestations on your own, recommending homeowners seek expert help at the first sign of a rodent problem to avoid escalation.

To help protect homes, the NPMA suggests several preventative measures, including sealing cracks and holes, storing food in airtight containers, decluttering storage areas, and inspecting for signs of rodents, such as droppings and gnaw marks.
