As Democratic representation hits historic lows in Wyoming, the state’s Democratic Party is organizing a “Homecoming 2024” effort to energize supporters and potentially sway independents and Republicans who may feel disenfranchised by Wyoming’s current political climate.
This move, described as a “homecoming” by Democratic Party Chair Joe Barbuto, aims to recapture engagement from former members and to spark renewed interest among voters left of center.
In an October 7 op-ed, Barbuto encouraged individuals who may feel disconnected from current GOP trends to register or re-register as Democrats before November 5. Democratic turnout remains low, with only around 26,800 registered Democrats statewide out of more than 236,000 total voters, while the Republican supermajority holds every statewide office and both chambers of the Legislature. However, Barbuto suggested that those feeling politically adrift could find alignment with the Democratic Party as it seeks to offer an alternative.
While Wyoming’s Republican ranks continue to grow, the internal divisions within the GOP, especially over recent years, have moved portions of the party further to the right. Additionally, in response to concerns about “crossover” voting, the Republican-led state legislature imposed restrictions on when voters can switch party affiliations. These “blackout” periods—96 days before primary elections and 14 days before the general election—limit Democratic leaders’ ability to convert disenchanted Republicans in time for early voting.
Wyoming law still defines a “major political party” as one receiving 10% or more in votes for a major office. This status for Wyoming’s Democrats now hinges on candidate Kyle “El” Cameron, who is running against incumbent Republican Harriet Hageman for the state’s US House seat. With early voting already underway, the impact of these efforts will be tested as the Democrats face a formidable Republican base and structural barriers that may challenge their ability to rebuild influence in Wyoming.
