Ukraine, South Korea Leaders Hold Phone Talk Amid Fears of North Korean Involvement in War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol expressing growing concerns over reports of North Korean troops and generals being deployed to support Russia in the Ukraine war, Bloomberg reports.

“There is only one conclusion — this war is being internationalized and goes beyond the borders of two states,” Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post following the conversation.

The two leaders agreed to enhance intelligence sharing and intensify contacts at all levels to develop a strategy in response to the escalating situation. South Korea also announced plans to send high-ranking officials to Ukraine to discuss potential areas of cooperation and assess the possibility of sending weapons in response to North Korea’s alleged troop transfer.

The reported deployment of North Korean military personnel has heightened concerns among the international community, as it suggests a potential escalation of the conflict and further involvement of outside actors.

South Korea’s potential decision to provide weapons to Ukraine would mark a significant shift in its foreign policy and could further complicate its relationship with both Russia and North Korea.
