The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) has started the process of returning inmates who were relocated to Mississippi’s Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility (TCCF) last year due to staffing shortages in Wyoming, Oil City News reports.
According to a WDOC statement released on Thursday, 60 inmates have returned to WDOC-operated facilities in Wyoming as of November 6, 2024. This partial relocation comes as the department has seen slight improvements in staffing.
“Currently, staffing has slightly improved and the WDOC was able to move sixty (60) inmates back to WDOC-operated facilities,” said the WDOC.
However, due to ongoing staff shortages, 166 inmates will remain housed at TCCF until the state can fully staff its facilities. The department noted that it is actively working on recruitment and retention efforts to address the staffing challenges.
The recent inmate transfer was coordinated with the support of several local agencies, including the Laramie Regional Airport, Albany County Sheriff’s Office, Laramie Police Department, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, and Wyoming Highway Patrol. WDOC reported that the transfer proceeded smoothly and without incident.
