A special tribunal in Bangladesh has requested Interpol to issue a red notice for the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of responsibility for the deaths of hundreds of protesters during a recent mass uprising, The Associated Press reports.
Hasina fled to India on August 5, ending a 15-year rule, following the widespread protests. She was accompanied by close aides and former ministers.
Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed leadership of the nation as interim leader on August 8 and subsequently reconfigured the tribunal, originally established to investigate crimes against humanity during the 1971 independence war against Pakistan.
The tribunal, through prosecutor B.M. Sultan Mahmud, has formally requested Interpol’s assistance in the arrest of Hasina and other individuals. The request was made via a letter to the police chief, seeking international cooperation in their apprehension.
The Yunus government has vowed to bring Hasina to justice and has indicated that it will seek her extradition from India.
