Ecuadorian international footballer Marco Angulo has tragically died at the age of 22 following a car crash on October 7, CNN reports, citing the Ecuadorian Football Federation.

The midfielder, on loan at LDU Quito from MLS side FC Cincinnati, had been in intensive care since the accident.

Angulo suffered severe head and lung injuries in the crash and underwent multiple surgeries, according to Ecuadorian outlet El Universo. He had played his last match for Quito on October 6th, the day before the crash.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation expressed deep sorrow over Angulo’s passing, calling him “an outstanding player” and a “great teammate.”

Angulo’s club, FC Cincinnati, also released a statement expressing their heartbreak and grief over the loss of the “joyful, kind young man.” They called him a “cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family” and offered condolences to his family.

Another footballer, Roberto Cabezas, a defender for Independiente Juniors, tragically died in the same crash, as did a friend.

Angulo represented Ecuador in two international friendlies against Iraq and Australia.

LDU Quito also mourned the loss of their player, stating, “His death is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”
