Russian state media reported Tuesday that Ukraine launched US-supplied Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) missiles into Russia’s Bryansk region, marking a potential significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, CNN reports.

The report, citing the Russian Defense Ministry and TASS news agency, claims that Russian air defenses intercepted five ATACMS missiles.

According to the Russian account, fragments of the intercepted missiles landed on a military facility, causing a fire that has since been extinguished. The ministry reported no casualties or significant damage.

If confirmed, this would represent the first known use of ATACMS missiles by Ukraine to target locations deep within Russian territory. The Biden administration recently authorized Ukraine to employ these longer-range weapons o strike targets inside Russia, a decision that has already drawn strong criticism from Moscow.

Ukraine has not yet officially commented on the alleged attack.
