Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underwent successful surgery Tuesday morning in Sao Paulo to address an intracranial hemorrhage, CNN reports, citing the government.

The 79-year-old president is recovering in the intensive care unit and is reportedly doing well. Doctors will hold a press conference later today to provide further details on the procedure and his prognosis.

The surgery stemmed from an MRI performed late Monday in Brasilia. Lula had complained of a headache, prompting the scan which revealed the bleeding on the brain. He was subsequently transferred to the Sirio Libanes hospital in Sao Paulo for the operation.

This latest medical intervention is linked to a fall Lula suffered at his home in late October. The fall resulted in a small brain hemorrhage and a head injury requiring stitches. While tests earlier this month indicated his condition was stable, the recent headache and subsequent MRI revealed the need for further medical intervention.

The October incident had already forced Lula to cancel a trip to Russia for a BRICS summit in Kazan, following medical advice to avoid long-haul flights.
