UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has signaled his opposition to any potential US tariffs imposed by the incoming Trump administration, stating his clear disapproval of trade barriers, Bloomberg reports.

Speaking before the House of Commons Liaison Committee on Thursday, Starmer responded to questions regarding President-elect Donald Trump’s repeated pledges to impose tariffs of up to 20% on all US imports, and even higher rates on goods from China.

While declining to speculate on Trump’s specific actions, Starmer emphasized his government’s commitment to preventing such tariffs from impacting UK-US trade.

“Am I alive to the danger of tariffs? Yes, of course,” Starmer said. “It won’t come as any surprise to you that I’m not a fan of tariffs, and therefore we have to make sure that we avoid tariffs. We’ve got very good trade with the US.”
