Maui police are investigating the discovery of a deceased individual found in the wheel well of a United Airlines plane after it landed at Kahului Airport, The Associated Press reports.
The grim discovery was made after the arrival of flight 202 from Chicago, according to statements released by both the airline and the Maui Police Department on Wednesday.
United Airlines confirmed that the body was located in the wheel well of one of the main landing gears on the Boeing 787-10 aircraft. The airline said that the wheel well is only accessible from the exterior of the plane and that it is currently unknown how or when the person gained access to the area.
The Maui Police Department confirmed in an emailed statement that they are “actively investigating” the incident but provided no further details.
The circumstances surrounding the person’s death remain unclear. Neither United Airlines nor the Maui Police Department have released any additional information regarding the identity of the deceased, the potential cause of death, or the circumstances leading to the person being found in the wheel well.
