The Wyoming Cowboys faced a narrow defeat Saturday night, falling 63-61 to San Diego State at the Viejas Arena, Bigfoot99 Radio reports.
Despite a strong second-half performance, the Pokes were unable to hold off the Aztecs in a game that went down to the wire.
Wyoming trailed by three points at halftime but came alive in the second half, building a 50-41 lead with just over six minutes remaining. The team’s offensive surge, highlighted by precise shooting and aggressive play, appeared to put them in control.
However, San Diego State mounted a formidable comeback, going on a 20-point run in the final six minutes. Free throws proved pivotal as the Aztecs reclaimed and maintained their lead down the stretch.
During a crucial six-minute scoring drought, the Cowboys managed just two points, struggling to find their rhythm despite early shooting success. They clawed back within two points thanks to an 11-1 run fueled by free throws but ultimately ran out of time.
Dontae Allen stood out for Wyoming, playing nearly 36 minutes and scoring 18 points. He shot 50% from the field, hit four of eight three-point attempts, and was perfect from the free-throw line. Allen also contributed two steals.
Head Coach Sundance Wicks commended the team for competing at a high level but acknowledged the late-game pressure.
“The pressure got to our young players,” he remarked.
Wyoming returns home for a two-game homestand, starting Tuesday against Utah State at 6:30 p.m. in the Arena-Auditorium.
