Brazilian football icon Marcelo, renowned for his dazzling performances with Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36, Al Jazeera reports.

The decision marks the end of an illustrious career brimming with trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles.

Marcelo cemented his legendary status during a glittering 15-year spell with Real Madrid from 2007 to 2022. In 546 appearances for the Spanish giants, he amassed an incredible 25 trophies, including six LaLiga titles, solidifying his place as one of the club’s most decorated players.

His contributions extended beyond mere participation. Marcelo famously scored in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid, a goal that helped Real Madrid secure “La Decima,” their long-awaited tenth European crown. That victory sparked a decade of unprecedented dominance for the club, culminating in five Champions League titles during Marcelo’s tenure. He was also instrumental in the team’s historic three consecutive Champions League victories between the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons.

Beyond the Champions League, Marcelo’s trophy cabinet at Real Madrid includes two Copa del Rey titles, five Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups, and three European Super Cups. He also had the honor of captaining the team towards the end of his career in Madrid, a testament to his leadership and respect within the squad.

Prior to his retirement, Marcelo returned to his roots, playing for Brazilian Serie A side Fluminense, where he began his youth and professional career. He capped off his time there by winning the Copa Libertadores in 2023, adding another prestigious trophy to his impressive collection before leaving by mutual consent in November.

On the international stage, Marcelo represented Brazil on 58 occasions. He won the Confederations Cup in 2013 and secured a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, as well as a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics.
