The University of Wyoming women’s golf team emerged victorious over Montana State with a 3-2 win in a tightly contested match on Wednesday, wrapping up the Mountain Classic Match Play at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California, Montana State University Athletics reports.

Despite a strong effort from Montana State, Wyoming secured the overall win. Head coach Brittany Basye acknowledged the team’s determination, stating,

“Obviously we wanted to get a win today but it is what it is. They all battled and didn’t give up. This is just the start, and being outside for only two days practicing before having to compete is difficult. We have things now we can work on back home, and when we get back outside again in ten days, we will take advantage of that time.”

For Wyoming, a key performance came from Megan Vogt, who faced off against Scarlet Weidig of Montana State. Although Weidig claimed a win over Vogt, securing a two-hole lead with one hole left to play, Wyoming’s players continued to perform consistently throughout the event.

In another competitive matchup, Becca Tschetter of Montana State defeated Wyoming’s Sophia Spiva. The match was called after the 15th hole, as the results at the other spots had already decided the outcome. Tschetter ended her tournament with a 2-1 record, finishing even-par with three birdies and three bogeys. Despite her strong play, Wyoming’s overall team strength proved too much, and the Cowboys clinched the victory.

Montana State’s players, including Weidig, Maddie Montoya, and Lauren Greeny, each finished 1-2 in their individual matches, showcasing resilience but ultimately falling short in the overall competition.

Up next, Montana State will head to Phoenix, Arizona, for the GCU Invitational, scheduled to take place from February 24 through February 26, eager to build on their experiences from the Mountain Classic.
