Trump Seeks Historic Nuclear Arms Reduction Agreement with Russia, China

President Donald Trump has proposed a bold initiative to significantly reduce nuclear stockpiles and defense spending, inviting Russia and China to join the United States in a trilateral agreement, Al Jazeera reports.
Speaking at the White House, President Trump expressed his desire to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping “when things calm down” to discuss cutting military budgets by 50%. Trump emphasized the importance of redirecting funds towards more productive endeavors, stating, “There’s no reason” to build new nuclear weapons when the US already possesses the capacity to inflict devastating damage.
Trump highlighted his recent discussion with President Putin regarding arms reduction, indicating a mutual commitment to pursuing substantial reductions. He noted the potential for a dangerous arms race, with China striving to catch up to the US and Russia in nuclear capabilities.
The President underscored the grave consequences of nuclear weapons use, stating it would be a “sad day” and potentially lead to “oblivion.”
This initiative follows Russia’s expression of interest in arms control, exemplified by President Putin’s willingness to engage in discussions on nuclear disarmament. The proposal aims to build upon existing efforts, such as the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, and revitalize arms control cooperation between the world’s major nuclear powers.
