The Wyoming Indian basketball teams had a mixed outcome during their road trip to Sublette County and Kemmerer this weekend,  WyoToday.com reports.

On Friday, Big Piney earned a rare sweep of the Chiefs and Lady Chiefs in a home matchup, but both Wyoming Indian teams rebounded with victories the following afternoon against Kemmerer.

In the girls’ game, Big Piney pulled away in the second half to secure a 66-56 win over the Lady Chiefs. The Lady Chiefs, who had struggled early in the game, turned things around the next day. After trailing 16-2 at the end of the first quarter and 21-8 at halftime, the Lady Chiefs rallied in the second half, outscoring Kemmerer 26-8 to finish with a 34-29 victory. Junior Taya Dixey led the charge with 19 points in the win.

The boys’ game was a close and thrilling contest, with Big Piney edging Wyoming Indian 70-68 after overtime. Junior Cordell Spoonhunter forced the extra period with a remarkable drive and layup, but Big Piney converted six free throws in overtime to hold off the Chiefs. Despite the tough loss, the Chiefs rebounded strongly on Saturday with a dominant 85-42 win over Kemmerer. The Chiefs led wire to wire, scoring 54 points in the first half alone. Senior Darian Augustine led the Chiefs with 12 points, and junior Parlayne Ferris added 11 points.

In both games, foul calls were a significant factor. On Friday, the Chiefs were plagued with foul troubles, having four players, including junior Heeyeniitou Monroe-Black, foul out. The Lady Chiefs also faced numerous fouls but had a more consistent performance against Kemmerer.

Despite Friday’s setbacks, both Wyoming Indian teams hold solid records heading into the final week of the 2024-25 regular season. The Chiefs and Lady Chiefs are each 15-7 overall and finished 5-1 in Southwest 2A quadrant play. The upcoming week will see Class 1A Saratoga visiting Ethete for Wyoming Indian’s regular-season finale before the West 2A Regional tournament begins on February 27.
