Nearly a week after a devastating crash and fire inside the Green River Tunnel claimed three lives, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has reopened the tunnel to traffic.
As of Thursday, vehicles are moving through the tunnel using its eastbound lanes, with more than 5,000 feet of concrete barriers separating opposing traffic.
While the tunnel is open, it remains an active construction zone as crews continue repairs on the heavily damaged westbound lanes. Speed limits in the area have been reduced to 35 mph, and WYDOT officials warn that congestion will still be an issue.
WYDOT has implemented several measures to improve safety and traffic flow:
- Traffic in both directions is now using the eastbound lanes.
- Additional screens have been installed to reduce headlight glare from oncoming vehicles.
- Zipper merging is recommended to help alleviate congestion.
- The westbound lanes remain closed while repairs are underway.
“This will help get interstate traffic moving on the highway again and out of Green River, but congestion will still be a factor,” said WYDOT District 3 Engineer John Eddins.
The crash and fire occurred last Friday, involving multiple vehicles and leading to a blaze that filled the tunnel with black smoke. Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County reported treating 18 people for injuries. Three individuals lost their lives in the accident:
- Christopher Johnson, 20, of Rawlins, WY
- Quentin Romero, 22, of Rawlins, WY
- Harmanjeet Singh, 30, of Nova Scotia, Canada
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and are asking anyone with dashcam footage to send it to [email protected].
Although the tunnel is operational, drivers should expect slower speeds and potential delays. WYDOT reminds motorists to be patient, follow posted speed limits, and use caution while traveling through the area.
