Elon Musk, owner of X, has announced plans to revamp the platform’s fact-checking system after recent polling data appeared to contradict Trump’s assessment of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky’s low popularity level in the country, suggesting instead that he enjoys widespread support, Al Jazeera reports.

Musk’s move comes amidst ongoing debate regarding Zelensky’s leadership and the direction of the conflict in Ukraine.

Musk has voiced concerns that X’s “community notes” feature is being manipulated by governments and traditional media outlets, skewing public perception.

He supported the suggestion by a scrutiny of a Ukrainian polling firm by amplifying concerns, raised by a user on X, about its potential bias due to ties with USAID.

Echoing sentiments expressed by US President Donald Trump, Musk questioned the legitimacy of Zelensky’s continued leadership without holding elections, given the current circumstances.

“If Zelensky was actually loved by the people of Ukraine, he would hold an election,” Musk stated on X. “He knows he would lose in a landslide, despite having seized control of ALL Ukrainian media, so he canceled the election.”

Musk referenced claims that US intelligence agencies estimate Zelensky’s approval to be as low as 4 percent, a figure also cited by President Trump. Musk challenged Zelensky to “hold an election and refute this,” implying that the Ukrainian leader’s reluctance to do so supports the assertion of his declining popularity. Zelensky has refused to hold an election while under martial law.
