President Donald Trump expressed his support on Wednesday for congressional efforts aimed at placing Washington, D.C., under direct federal control, The Associated Press reports.

Speaking to reporters, Trump cited concerns about crime and homelessness in the district as reasons for his endorsement.

“I think we should take over Washington, D.C. — make it safe,” Trump said. “I think that we should govern District of Columbia.”

Under the existing Home Rule authority, Congress already has the power to review and overturn D.C. laws. Some congressional Republicans have been advocating for a more extensive intervention, potentially reversing decades of limited autonomy granted to the city.

Trump acknowledged liking D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser personally, but criticized the city’s management. “They’re not doing the job,” Trump stated, citing concerns about crime and the presence of homeless encampments. He argued that the situation negatively impacts the city’s image, particularly when hosting foreign leaders.
