Following parliamentary elections, Friedrich Merz, leader of the victorious center-right CDU/CSU alliance, has emphasized the importance of a robust Europe capable of managing its own security, Al Jazeera reports.

While acknowledging the need for Europe to strengthen its capabilities, Merz expressed optimism about future collaboration with the United States, particularly following positive remarks from President Donald Trump.

“That is my absolute priority, I have no illusions at all about what will come out of America,” Merz said.

Trump hailed the outcome as a “great day” for both Germany and the US, suggesting a shared desire to move away from policies he views as detrimental, particularly concerning energy and immigration.

The CDU/CSU secured 208 seats in the election, with the AfD taking 152 seats. The SDP secured 120 seats, followed by the Greens with 85 seats. The Die Linke secured 64 seats and BSW with one seat.

The election results in Germany come amidst ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to find a solution to the war in Ukraine, about which some have voiced concerns.

Merz noted the results show Germans are seeking a common sense agenda.
