The 2024-2025 Wyoming High School Wrestling season is coming to an exciting close, with the State Championships set to take place at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper from Thursday, February 27 through Saturday, March 1, WyoPreps reports.

Over the course of three days, both girls’ and boys’ wrestling competitions will be held on all seven mats, with champions being crowned on Saturday.

Defending state champions include Star Valley (Girls), Moorcroft (2A), Green River (3A), and Thunder Basin (4A). Several standout wrestlers are eyeing major milestones, including three athletes striving to become four-time champions: Nathan Fish of Lingle-Ft. Laramie/Southeast, Roany Proffit of Kemmerer, and Liam Fox of Cheyenne East. Additionally, five wrestlers are aiming for their third title: McKinzie Mortensen (Pine), Becca Oetken (Sheridan), Dayne Humes (Moorcroft), Ryan Nutt (Pine), and Tel Parry (Star Valley).

The championships will feature a variety of teams across different divisions. Notable team competitors include:

  • 2A Boys: Moorcroft, Kemmerer, Thermopolis, Lingle-Ft. Laramie
  • 3A Boys: Powell, Rawlins, Torrington, Pinedale
  • 4A Boys: Thunder Basin, Star Valley, Kelly Walsh, Cheyenne East

The girls’ competition sees Star Valley as the favorite for their third consecutive title, but other strong contenders include Cheyenne East and Pinedale. Some of the top individual matchups to watch in the girls’ divisions include Riley Meyer (Kemmerer) vs. Ellie Bouzis (Cheyenne Central) at 100 pounds, McKinzie Mortensen (Pine) vs. Rylin Plant (Rock Springs) at 105 pounds, and Becca Oetken (Sheridan) vs. Joci Davis (Cheyenne East) at 190 pounds.

For the boys’ divisions, 2A, 3A, and 4A feature highly competitive individual matchups as well. In 2A, Dayne Humes (Moorcroft) will face Landon Rhyne (Wind River) in the 126-pound weight class, while Nathan Fish (Lingle-Ft. Laramie) is a strong contender at 120 pounds. In 3A, Ryan Nutt (Pine) and William Wood (Cody) will go head-to-head at 126 pounds, while in 4A, the 106-pound match between Lucas Stirling (Thunder Basin) and Shaiden Casner (Cheyenne East) is one to look out for.
