Pope Francis is “sitting upright and receiving therapy” for double pneumonia, the Vatican announced Wednesday, as faithful across the globe, particularly in Argentina and Rome, gathered in prayer for his recovery, The Associated Press reports.
While doctors maintain he is in critical but stable condition, having not experienced any new respiratory crises since Saturday, they also emphasize that he is not out of danger.
The Vatican stated they anticipate releasing information later today regarding the results of a CT scan conducted Tuesday evening. This scan aimed to assess the status of the complex lung infection that has necessitated his hospitalization since February 14. The Vatican confirmed that the Pope had a restful night and was able to sit in his armchair on Wednesday while undergoing therapy.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, has been designated to lead a prayer vigil in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday night. This move puts a key figure, influential in any future papal conclave, under the spotlight during this period of uncertainty. Pope Francis recently extended Re’s term as dean, retaining him in this crucial position rather than appointing a successor. Re previously served as prefect of the Vatican’s congregation for bishops from 2000-2010, holding one of the most powerful and influential positions within the Holy See.
On Tuesday evening, members of the Argentine community in Rome convened at their dedicated church for a special Mass. Cardinal Baldassarre Reina, the Pope’s vicar for Rome, presided over the service.
