Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on officials to maintain composure in the face of domestic and international challenges, suggesting a measured approach to new trade and investment restrictions imposed by the Trump administration, Bloomberg reports.

According to a Xinhua News Agency report published on Wednesday, Xi told top officials, including members of the Politburo and State Council, that China “must enhance its political capabilities and calmly respond to challenges brought about by changes in the domestic and international situation.”

These comments come as President Donald Trump intensifies actions against China in his second term. Recent measures by the US include restricting Chinese investment in strategic sectors, encouraging Mexico to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, and advocating for fees on commercial ships made in China. Additionally, the White House is reportedly working on stricter semiconductor restrictions and urging allies to implement further limits on China’s chip industry.

Despite rising tensions, both countries appear to be focused on maintaining a degree of stability in their relationship. Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke on Friday, marking the second high-level contact since Trump assumed office. Trump has also emphasized his personal connection with Xi and suggested the possibility of a new trade agreement.

In his recent address, Xi also stressed the importance of maintaining social stability, promoting sustained economic recovery, and steadily improving living standards for the Chinese people.
