Adobe Inc. has released its flagship Photoshop editing app for the iPhone, marking the first smartphone release for the industry-leading creative software, Bloomberg reports.
The launch represents a significant step in Adobe’s efforts to expand its presence on mobile platforms.
The new iPhone app joins Adobe’s existing Photoshop app for the Apple iPad, and the company plans to release a version for Android devices later this year.
According to Adobe, the free version of the app includes many of Photoshop’s core features, including generative AI tools for filling gaps in images and layer-based photo editing. A $7.99 subscription unlocks premium features, access to Photoshop on the web, and additional functionality on mobile and iPad devices.
This release aims to provide users with a robust set of tools, even without a subscription, and will test the appeal of Adobe’s artificial intelligence-powered features to a wider consumer audience.
While Adobe has long been a leader in design and creative software on desktop platforms, translating that success to mobile has proven challenging. The market for photo-editing apps on smartphones is highly competitive. According to initial download rankings in the US after its launch, Photoshop ranked 29th in its category. ByteDance Ltd.’s CapCut video editor, Instagram, and Canva Inc.’s editing app held the top positions in the photo and video category, while Adobe’s own Lightroom, tailored for processing photos, ranked ninth.
