The US Justice Department (DOJ) on Thursday officially released information pertaining to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Bloomberg reports.

The department stated that much of the released material had been “previously leaked,” a move authorized by Attorney General Pam Bondi amidst growing pressure from both Republican and Democratic members of Congress.

The released documents, some of which were heavily redacted, represent the first phase of declassified files relating to Epstein.

“The first phase of declassified files largely contains documents that have been previously leaked but never released in a formal capacity by the US Government,” the DOJ stated in a press release accompanying the document dump.

Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to state charges in Florida, including the procurement of minors for prostitution. He died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls. Both a medical examiner’s report and an FBI investigation concluded that Epstein died by suicide.

Last year, a federal court unsealed records related to Epstein, including references to prominent figures. However, those documents contained few new revelations beyond what had already been reported in the media.

Attorney General Bondi indicated that more information exists and suggested that the DOJ may release additional documents in the coming days.
