The Trump administration has directed federal agencies to collaborate with Elon Musk’s newly formed “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) to prepare for widespread layoffs of federal employees, Al Jazeera reports.

The move is part of a broader restructuring plan due on March 13, according to a memo released Wednesday by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

President Trump alluded to the planned layoffs during his first cabinet meeting since returning to office, specifically targeting the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Administrator Lee Zeldin.

The administration says the layoffs are necessary to shrink a bloated bureaucracy and reduce taxpayer expenses.

Agencies involved in immigration and law enforcement were reportedly exempt from the layoffs outlined in Wednesday’s memo.
