The University of Wyoming men’s golf team made a strong push on Day 2 of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, held at The Classic Club, posting the best second-round score of any team in the field.
The Cowboys shot a 275 (-13) on Tuesday, moving into a tie for fourth place at 563 (-13).
Head coach Joe Jensen credited the team’s disciplined approach for the improvement.
“We just stayed disciplined, and I didn’t change our process,” Jensen said. “There was enough good going on. And give credit to the guys. They just stayed in the process and made a few less mistakes. We just played better.”
Colorado Christian led the tournament at 552 (-24), followed by Charlotte at 555 (-21) and Cal Baptist at 561 (-15). Wyoming’s performance tied them for fourth with Coastal Carolina heading into the final round.
Individually, Wyoming’s Damon Vilkauskas remained the top performer for the Cowboys, shooting a 69 (-3) in the second round with six birdies. He finished the day tied for 13th at 139 (-5). Teammate Patrick Azevedo had the best round of the day for Wyoming, shooting a 68 (-4) to move into a tie for 25th.
Wyoming wrapped up the tournament in sixth place at 855 (-9) after shooting a final-round 292 (+4) on Wednesday. Charlotte claimed the team title at 833 (-31), while Colorado Christian finished as the runner-up at 837 (-27), and Coastal Carolina placed third at 846 (-18).
Davis Seybert, competing as an individual, was the Cowboys’ top finisher, tying for 14th place at 211 (-5) after shooting an even-par 72 in the final round.
Brody Leid and Kristof Panke led Wyoming’s official team scorers, both tying for 22nd at 213 (-3). Leid shot a 71 (-1) in the final round, while Panke carded an even-par 72, making a team-best five birdies.
Vilkauskas finished tied for 29th at 214 (-2) after a 75 (+3) on Wednesday. Jaren Calkins tied for 39th at 217 (+1), and Patrick Azevedo tied for 52nd at 219 (+3).
The Cowboys will return to competition at the Lamkin San Diego Classic on March 10-11 at the San Diego Country Club.
