World Reacts to Trump-Zelensky Contentious Meeting as Ties Become Even More Strained

A meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky last week has cast doubt on the future of US support for Ukraine, following a tense exchange at the White House, Al Jazeera reports.
The meeting, also attended by Vice President JD Vance and some other top officials, centered on the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The meeting’s focus was a proposed minerals deal that would grant the US access to Ukrainian rare earth minerals in exchange for US assistance to Ukraine.
Zelensky’s speech focused on security assurances for Ukraine, a point of contention as the US under the Trump administration has been reluctant to provide such guarantees in terms of the “America First” agenda. Tensions further escalated when Trump referenced his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and suggested Zelensky’s stance towards Putin was impeding peace negotiations.
The meeting became increasingly strained when Vice President Vance pointed out that Zelensky was being “disrespectful” to the country which provided Kyiv with billions of dollars of aid.
“Have you said ‘thank you’ once?” he said.
The meeting concluded prematurely, and the minerals deal was not signed. A White House official, speaking anonymously, told Reuters that Trump is currently not interested in pursuing the deal. The same official claimed the Ukrainian delegation attempted to revive the deal after being asked to leave.
Following the White House visit, Zelensky appeared on Fox News, where he was repeatedly questioned about the possibility of an apology to Trump. While declining to apologize, Zelensky expressed regret over the public dispute.
Several Trump administration officials have since publicly criticized Zelensky. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the meeting as a “fiasco,” questioning Zelensky’s commitment to peace. Senator Lindsey Graham labeled the meeting an “utter disaster” and urged Zelensky to apologize or for Ukraine to find new leadership. Graham, a staunch supporter of Ukraine, said he had advised Zelensky prior to the meeting to concentrate on the mineral deal and avoid discussions about security guarantees and a ceasefire.
The Trump administration’s stance received support from Moscow. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also commended Trump for his stance on peace.
