Canadian Consumers Boycott US Products, Shop Less on Amazon Amidst Trade Tensions

A significant portion of Canadian consumers are reducing their purchases of US-made products and decreasing their spending on Amazon.com Inc. in response to US President Donald Trump’s escalated trade threats against Canada, Bloomberg reports.
According to a recent poll conducted by Leger Marketing, a Canadian public opinion research firm, two-thirds of surveyed Canadians indicated that they have bought fewer American items from stores in recent weeks. Additionally, 55% reported ordering less from Amazon.
Trump’s threats to employ “economic force” against Canada, including the imposition of tariffs, have fueled resentment among Canadians. His repeated suggestion that Canada should become an American state has further intensified tensions. This has triggered a surge of patriotism, with consumers actively promoting Canadian products, canceling or postponing US travel plans, and expressing their displeasure at sporting events.
It’s important to note that opinion polls may not always accurately reflect consumer behavior, and external factors such as the weakening Canadian dollar could also be influencing purchasing decisions. Trump’s tariff threats have negatively impacted the Canadian dollar’s value against the US dollar, reducing the purchasing power of Canadian consumers for US products and travel.
The survey also indicated that 83% of Canadian respondents were concerned that Trump would use tariffs and trade sanctions “to push Canada into a closer and more formal economic relationship with the United States.”
The Leger poll surveyed over 1,500 Canadian adults between February 21 and 23.
