Central Wyoming College (CWC) is set to present Bright Star, a heartfelt musical by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, from Thursday, March 13, through Saturday, March 22, at the Robert A. Peck Theater in Riverton, Wyoming, County 10 reports.

Set in the Appalachian Mountains and shifting between the 1920s and 1940s, the production tells a moving story of love, loss, and redemption, all set to a rich bluegrass score.

Inspired by the true story of the “Iron Mountain Baby,” Bright Star follows Alice Murphy, a successful magazine editor in 1945 who is confronted with memories of her past. Through a chance encounter with a young writer, Jimmy Ray Dobson, Alice embarks on a journey of self-discovery, uncovering long-buried secrets and finding unexpected connections between past and present.

Director Joey West, CWC’s Instructor of Theater, was drawn to the show’s emotional depth and music.

“I saw a production of Bright Star a few years ago and fell in love with its story,” West said. “Alice Murphy’s journey is one of resilience, hope, and transformation, and it’s told through some of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever staged.”

The show’s score, influenced by the bluegrass traditions of the era, features live instrumental performances, adding an authentic and immersive feel to the production.

“We had an incredible experience working with a live band for Paint Your Wagon, and I knew we had the right team to take on Bright Star,” West added.

The production features a talented cast that includes both CWC students and community members. Kadie Crook, who plays Alice Murphy, shared how rewarding the experience has been.

“I’ve learned so much about resilience and hope through Alice’s story,” Crook said. “Her journey is full of emotion, and I feel lucky to bring this character to life.”

West praised the dedication of the cast and crew.

“Our team has put their hearts into this production,” he said. “It’s an honor to work with such passionate and talented individuals. We hope the community comes out to support them and enjoy this incredible show.”
