A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in Australia after boarding a commercial Jetstar Airways flight with a loaded shotgun, Al Jazeera reports.

The incident occurred at Avalon Airport, located some 37 miles from Melbourne, on Thursday.

According to Victoria Police, the teenager was subdued and detained by the crew and passengers onboard the aircraft. Fortunately, none of the some 160 passengers and crew members were injured during the incident.

The teenager has been charged with eight offences, including endangering the safe operation of an aircraft and possession of a firearm.

During a court appearance at a juvenile court on Friday, police alleged that the teen had also planted a fake homemade explosive device and threatened both passengers and crew members, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Victoria Police Superintendent Michael Reid told reporters on Thursday that the teenager was successfully overpowered by several passengers.
