After an impressive season leading the Wyoming Cowboys in both scoring and assists, senior guard Obi Agbim has been named the Mountain West Newcomer of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday, KNEB reports.
The award was determined by votes from head coaches and media members covering the league.
Agbim, a native of Aurora, Colorado, is in his first season with the Cowboys and has made an immediate impact. He also earned Third-Team All-Mountain West honors, becoming the first Wyoming player to win Newcomer of the Year since Uche Nsonwu-Amadi in the 2000-01 season.
Agbim has been a key offensive player for Wyoming, ranking fourth in the conference in scoring with 17.8 points per game. He has scored 20 or more points in 10 games this season and has been one of the top three-point shooters in the nation, hitting 44.4% of his shots from beyond the arc. That percentage leads the Mountain West and ranks ninth nationally.
From beyond the arc, Agbim has been especially consistent, making three or more three-pointers in 15 games this season. His total of 79 made three-pointers ranks ninth in Wyoming’s single-season history, and his 2.8 three-pointers per game is the second-best mark in the conference.
In addition to his scoring ability, Agbim has been a playmaker for the Cowboys, leading the team in assists with 3.5 per game (4.6 per game in conference play). His performance in conference matchups ranks 12th in the Mountain West in assists per game. He also recorded one double-double this season, achieving a career-high 10 assists against Utah State.
