The Social Security Administration (SSA) has decided to maintain critical phone services for millions of Americans after concerns arose about a proposed shift to online and in-person processing, the Washington Post reports.

The Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, had been reviewing ways to curb fraud in Social Security payments. However, after significant public attention, the agency will now implement a more targeted approach—eliminating phone-based direct deposit changes to enhance security while leaving other phone services intact.

The SSA’s original proposal would have ended telephone-based claims processing, a move that sparked concerns among seniors and disabled individuals who rely on these services. Social Security’s toll-free number has long been an essential tool for millions, particularly those with limited internet access. Critics worried that forcing all applications online or in-person could create undue hardship for vulnerable populations.

Recognizing these concerns, the Trump administration made a pragmatic decision to preserve phone access while addressing a key area of vulnerability—direct deposit fraud. According to SSA officials, nearly 40% of Social Security direct deposit fraud originates from fraudulent phone calls. By stopping direct deposit changes over the phone, the administration aims to prevent bad actors from redirecting beneficiaries’ funds without their knowledge. This measured adjustment reflects a commitment to both fraud prevention and customer service.

President Trump has long championed government efficiency and fraud reduction, ensuring taxpayer dollars are used appropriately. The DOGE team, tasked with cutting waste, identified Social Security fraud as a significant area for reform. While some critics claim fraud levels have been overstated, Musk and Trump remain focused on protecting the program’s integrity.

“Preventing fraud should be celebrated, not criticized,” said White House spokesman Harrison Fields.

The administration’s careful revision—preserving most phone services while eliminating a high-risk fraud pathway—demonstrates a balanced and responsible approach to reform.

With Social Security supporting over 73 million Americans, ensuring its long-term sustainability is paramount. The Trump administration’s strategy acknowledges that efficiency reforms must not come at the cost of essential services. By tackling fraud without restricting overall access, the administration is taking steps to modernize and safeguard the system for future retirees.
