The Wyoming Cowgirls put up a strong fight but ultimately fell 4-1 to Nevada in a hard-fought home match, University of Wyoming Athletics reports.
Despite securing the doubles point, Wyoming was unable to carry that momentum into singles play, where two close third-set tiebreak losses proved to be the difference.
The Cowgirls started the day on a high note, winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Violetta Borodina and Dilnaz Mashabayeva continued their impressive form, earning a 6-4 victory at the top spot to improve their season record to 10-3 and remain undefeated in dual matches (4-0). Eugenia Ceinos and Elena Trencheva secured another 6-4 win at No. 2, giving Wyoming an early 1-0 advantage.
The momentum shifted in singles play as Nevada swept the top four matches. The Cowgirls had opportunities to extend the contest but fell just short in two decisive third-set tiebreakers. Borodina fought back from a first-set loss but ultimately fell 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) at the No. 1 position. Ruby Young also battled through three sets but came up short in another close tiebreak, losing 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Wyoming now turns its attention to its first road test in conference play. The Cowgirls will travel to face San Jose State on Friday at 1 p.m. (MT) before taking on Fresno State on Sunday at the same time.
