Two key figures in Cheyenne Post 6 baseball, Ty Lain and Phil Maggard, will be inducted into the Wyoming American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame this summer, Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports.
Their contributions to the program will be recognized during the Wyoming Class AA State Tournament, which Cheyenne will host on July 28.
Lain was a standout player for Cheyenne Post 6, spending five years on the varsity team. He played shortstop for four seasons, earning all-state honors three times and helping Post 6 win four Class AA state championships.
His success extended beyond Wyoming, as he was selected to compete in USA Baseball’s Tournament of Stars in Cary, North Carolina.
Lain continued his baseball career at the collegiate level, starting at New Mexico Junior College before transferring to Mississippi Gulf Coast, where he was named an Academic All-American. He later played for Regis University in Denver, where he helped the Rangers win the 2012 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title.
After college, Lain returned to Cheyenne and joined Post 6 as an assistant coach from 2012-2015 before taking over as the varsity manager in 2016. Under his leadership, Post 6 won 502 games, seven state championships, and the 2023 Northwest Regional title—making Cheyenne the first Wyoming team to advance to the American Legion World Series. Post 6 made it to the semifinals of that tournament.
Lain also guided Post 6 to the 2019 Connie Mack World Series, marking the first time a Wyoming team qualified for the event.
Maggard has played a crucial role in Post 6’s success, serving on the board of directors for 17 years, including 15 years as president. During his tenure, Cheyenne has won 15 state titles and finished as regional runners-up in 2022 before securing a regional championship in 2023.
Maggard has been instrumental in organizing major tournaments, serving as local chairperson for Wyoming’s Class AA state tournaments in 2011, 2013, and 2018. He also led Cheyenne’s successful bid to host the Northwest Regional tournaments in 2015 and 2016.
Beyond tournaments, Maggard has contributed to facility improvements at Powers Field, including expanded seating and a larger press box. His efforts also helped ensure that Wyoming held a Legion baseball season in 2020, despite the national organization canceling its events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The induction of Lain and Maggard into the Wyoming American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame recognizes their lasting impact on Post 6 and the state’s baseball community.
