Three Cody High School alpine skiers joined the Wyoming state team to compete in the Western United States High School Championship races, a season-ending event featuring top racers from several states, Cody Enterprise reports.
Maya Davis (sophomore), Mia Broussard (sophomore), and Sunday Schuh (junior) were among the Wyoming athletes racing against competitors from California, Oregon, Nevada (two teams), Colorado, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota.
For the past five years, Wyoming alpine skiers have participated in this championship event, which rotates among ski resorts in Oregon, Nevada, and California. This year, the competition took place at Grand Targhee in Alta, Wyoming.
Unlike some states that have different qualification systems, Wyoming selects its top 12 boys and 12 girls based on All-State points accumulated throughout the season, according to Cody coach Taylor Hansen.
Scoring for the event combined both slalom and giant slalom results, with the boys’ and girls’ points contributing to the overall team standings.
Wyoming’s team finished fourth overall, outperforming teams from Nevada, Illinois, Oregon, and California. Skiers from Jackson, Casper, Laramie, and Pinedale joined the Cody athletes in representing the state.
