Wyoming to Receive 3,461 Acres Near Glendo Reservoir for Wildlife Management

A land transfer process is nearing completion, with approximately 3,461 acres of US Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) property along the North Platte River set to be conveyed to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD), WyoFile reports.
This land, located in Converse and Platte counties, will continue to be managed as a wildlife habitat management area.
Unlike broader federal land transfer debates, this conveyance was initiated years ago by Game and Fish leaders who saw the land’s value for wildlife and hunting. Matt Pollock, WGFD’s Casper Region habitat and access coordinator, emphasized the area’s popularity among hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.
Although the federal government still holds the title, WGFD has already been managing the land since spring 2023 under the North Glendo Wildlife Habitat Management Area. The agency has made minor modifications, such as installing gates and signs while closing certain roads to protect habitat.
The Bureau of Reclamation, which originally acquired the land for floodplain purposes in the 1950s, has since deemed it excess property. Given that BOR’s primary mission involves water infrastructure rather than land management, the agency moved to dispose of the property.
In February 2024, the US General Services Administration (GSA) issued a notice allowing other federal agencies to express interest in the land. However, by the March 2024 deadline, no other agencies had come forward. The next phase involves a 30-day public benefit and homeless-use screening, after which Wyoming Game and Fish can formally acquire the property.
Importantly, the land will be gifted—not sold—to WGFD, meaning no state funds will be used for the transfer. If the process were to fall through, the property would be put up for public auction, a prospect that has already attracted interest from private buyers.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission has approved moving forward with the acquisition
