Sanders Approves of Trump’s Fentanyl, Border Security Efforts, Calls for Immigration Reform
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) expressed approval of some of President Donald Trump’s policies related to fentanyl and border security, Fox News reports.
“I mean, I think cracking down on fentanyl, making sure our borders are stronger,” Sanders told ABC’s Jonathan Karl on “This Week.” He also stated, “Nobody thinks illegal immigration is appropriate,” advocating for comprehensive immigration reform. “I don’t think that it’s appropriate for people to be coming across the border illegally,” he added.
This stance appears to contrast with Sanders’ 2020 presidential platform, which included proposals to significantly curtail the powers of ICE and CBP, pause deportations, end the border wall project, and decriminalize illegal immigration.
During the ABC interview, Sanders cautioned against mass deportations, arguing that deporting “20 million people” would “destroy the entire country,” highlighting the role of undocumented workers in key sectors like agriculture and meatpacking. He emphasized the need for comprehensive immigration reform including guest worker programs.
Acknowledging that illegal immigration has increased under the Biden administration, Sanders conceded:
“Should have done much better, no argument.”
Sanders has been actively engaged in a “Fighting Oligarchy Tour,” recently joined by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for events in Nevada, Arizona, and Colorado.
