The trial of French actor Gerard Depardieu, facing charges of sexually assaulting two women during a 2021 film shoot, commenced today in a Paris court, Al Jazeera reports.

The proceedings are anticipated to be a significant moment for the #MeToo movement in France.

Depardieu, 76, was present in the courtroom, seated opposite the judge while the two plaintiffs also attended the hearing. The alleged assaults are said to have occurred during the filming of “Les Volets Verts” (The Green Shutters).

Prosecutors allege that Depardieu groped one of the women on the film set, pulling her towards him, trapping her with his legs, and touching her waist, hips, and breasts while uttering obscene words. They stated that three individuals witnessed the incident. The second woman alleges that Depardieu groped her both on the film set and in the street.

Prior to the trial’s commencement, Depardieu, accompanied by his lawyer, walked past reporters, maintaining a composed demeanor and making no statement. He entered the courtroom and engaged in conversation with other actors present.

Depardieu, a prominent figure in French cinema, has faced an increasing number of sexual assault allegations in recent years. Approximately 20 women have accused him of inappropriate behavior, though several cases have been dismissed due to the statute of limitations.

French actor Charlotte Arnould was the first woman to file a criminal complaint against Depardieu in 2018. Depardieu has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
